Context of the Movement
On Thursday, July 18, the students' "complete shutdown" began in demand of quota reform. Prior to this, they announced this program on social media on July 17. During the program, in Dhaka and various parts of the country, the controversial student organization Chhatra League, which is a student-named organization, and the autocratic government's law enforcement forces, armed with dangerous weapons reserved for war, attacked the protesters. News of more than 27 killings was received across the country.
People across the country extended support for the protesters' program. To blame the students and eliminate them harshly, the Awami League set fire to various government establishments in Mohakhali, including the Setu Bhaban, Health Bhaban, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Bhaban, and Disaster Bhaban. Over a hundred vehicles were burned. The state media, Bangladesh Television, was set on fire twice. It was regularly broadcast on state media that students had committed such incidents. Sheikh Hasina was heavily criticized for not visiting the students killed in the massacre. On the instructions of MP Palak, mobile internet service was shut down from July 17. As a result, the entire country was virtually disconnected from the internet. To further muddy the situation and kill students, BGB was deployed across the country. All educational institutions were declared closed. HSC exams were postponed. Ordinary students expelled terrorist Chhatra League from Dhaka and Jahangirnagar Universities and took them under their control.
The Awami administration of the universities announced the departure of the universities and the evacuation of the halls to maintain the position of the Chhatra League. Students, in turn, announced the evacuation of university teachers and employees from their respective residences. In the evening, police-BGB-terrorist Chhatra League jointly attacked and re-occupied the halls. Students were severely tortured. The 9-point program began. Student leaders were arrested and disappeared. The task was done by the then Detective Brach Head Harun, known as the 'owner of the rice hotel' and nicknamed 'Haun Uncle'. In the face of anger and protest, they were released after taking signatures from the student leaders stating that they had withdrawn the movement. The country began to move towards a worse situation. As expatriates stopped sending remittances in protest from abroad, the Hasina government fell into further trouble. On August 4, students and the public began to defeat the police, BGB, Ansar, RAB, and Chhatra League equipped with lethal weapons. This accelerated the resignation of the autocratic government.
On August 1, 2024, the Awami League and all their left-wing alliances banned Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir. Their intention was to carry out genocide in this way and suppress the movement. In the past, the Awami League had eliminated various movements in this way. The students and the public roared even more. A storm of condemnation arose in the country. Facebook was flooded with anti-Awami League writings. One by one, the Awami League's misdeeds to suppress the movement began to be publicized. The killing of innocent and meritorious students began to be discussed in the world media.

That was Tanmoy's last conversation with his mother. Tanmoy's uncle has a printing business. He also participated in the movement on the streets that day. On August 5, at the time of Zohr, it was learned on the phone that Saiful Islam Tanmoy had been shot. The bullet hit the back of his head.
