Context of the Incident
Between 2008 and 2024, Bangladesh gradually transformed into a dysfunctional state. The rich became richer, while the poor remained impoverished. In 2008, the advisors of the Awami League envisioned a future where; by providing certain resources to India, Bangladesh would become like Canada or Singapore. Fifteen years later, the people realized that the ruling class was not just corrupt but a dangerous band of robbers.
The government's corruption, looting, embezzlement of thousands of crores abroad, and the destruction of the education and judiciary systems led to widespread public unrest. Patriotic students and citizens protested against secret agreements with India that were against the country's interests. After coming to power through election engineering in 2008, the government began arresting, abducting, and killing patriotic citizens and protesters using the misuse of law.
While the government managed to buy off leaders and workers of the BNP, it failed miserably to do so with the leaders of the country's largest Islamic party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. To maintain long-term power, the government started arresting, abducting, and killing Jamaat leaders. Anyone who spoke for justice, protested against the government's mismanagement, or participated in any movement was labeled as Jamaat-Shibir and subjected to brutal torture. The situation deteriorated to the point were beating and killing someone under the accusation of being Jamaat-Shibir became a legitimate act. For instance, a passerby named, Bishojit a Hindu, was publicly murdered by Chhatra League after being labeled as Shibir.
The government planned to stay in power permanently. They abolished the unjust freedom fighter quota in government jobs in 2018 under public pressure but reinstated it in 2024 through party-affiliated judges in the High Court. Their aim was to appoint party loyalists and incompetent individuals to jobs through fake freedom fighter quotas, thereby ensuring the government's eternal rule.
Students in universities and colleges began protesting to abolish the quota system. The notorious Chhatra League responded to peaceful protests with baton charges. Throughout July, police, BGB, RAB, and Ansar took to the streets with weapons to suppress the students and public. Thousands of students and citizens were injured and killed. Internet and mobile networks were shut down, and curfews were imposed. Students and citizens were arrested from their homes. The public erupted in protest, and the streets became even more heated.
On August 4, the demand for the government's resignation was declared, and on August 5, the people took to the streets. Seeing the end approaching, Sheikh Hasina fled to India. Upon hearing the news, the public joyfully took to the streets. Shahadat Hossain Shamim also joined the victory procession. Although Hasina fled, her instructions to the police and BGB were to carry out genocide. Shamim was shot in the head in front of Ashulia Police Station at 4 PM and died on the spot. The next day, he was buried in Asalpara, Ramganj, Lakshmipur.
