Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative
The anti-discrimination student-public movement is an important chapter in the history of Bangladesh. This movement was organized for the rights of students and social justice. In Bangladeshi society, students have often suffered from injustice, discrimination, and lack of opportunity. Fighting against this discrimination, they have repeatedly stood before the powerful of the state and raised their demands for justice. During such a movement, Al Amin, an innocent, devout, and peace-loving young man, who was not involved in any gatherings or clashes, was martyred. His death deeply mourns not only his family but the entire nation.
The Context of the Movement
The main context of the anti-discrimination student-public movement is the ongoing deprivation of students and the lack of fair opportunities in various fields of society. The quota system in government jobs, the inadequacy of the education system, the lack of equal opportunities in higher education and jobs, etc., were all at the center of this movement. Thousands of students were suffering from despair about their future due to discrimination, and this despair sparked a huge movement, which spread like a spark throughout the country in a short period. The main demand of the movement was equal rights in education and employment. In particular, the students who were agitating for merit-based recruitment in government jobs strongly expressed their views. As a result, conflict arose between the government and the agitating students. On the one hand, the government's promises and mismanagement, and on the other hand, the students' deprivation and despair. Both these issues fueled this movement. One of the tragedies of this movement is the police firing on peaceful protests and the injury and death of students. Although the protesters peacefully protested to demand their demands, the repression of the law enforcement agencies was extremely brutal. This created widespread anger among the students and increased the importance of the movement in the minds of the entire nation.
Introduction of Shaheed Al Amin
Al Amin was a resident of Daulatpur, Madhyapara village in Barura Upazila of Comilla. He was an ordinary young man who lived in Radio Colony of Savar for the sake of livelihood. This young man, who worked in a garment trading center, was very devout and responsible. Al Amin studied up to the Open University and his dream was to help his family financially as well as build his life beautifully. His family's financial condition was critical. His father, Babul Mia, worked in a fan factory, whose income was not enough to meet the needs of the whole family. His elder brother Muhsin was an expatriate in Qatar and his remittances were the main source of income for the family. Younger brother Zahirul worked in a garage, but his income was not very high either. The family was solely dependent on their homestead land, beyond which they had no significant assets. Four months ago, Al Amin was married to Shamima Akter Nuri. Wife Shamima is now a first-year intermediate student. Al Amin's dream was to build a happy life for his wife and family, but that dream came to an end prematurely.
How He Became a Martyr
Al Amin's death is a tragic and unexpected event. On July 19, 2024, Al Amin was returning home after praying as usual. On the way, he was suddenly shot by the killer police unleashed by the fascist government targeting the protesting freedom-seeking students and the public. The bullet hit his back and came out in front. Passers-by immediately took him to the hospital, but the doctor there declared him dead. He was alive for only an hour after being shot. Such a brutal attack on the way back from peaceful prayers became an irreparable loss for his family and locals. According to his mother, Monowara Begum, "My son never got involved in any trouble. He always prayed and was caring to everyone."
