Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

In the riverine Chandpur district's Pingra village, Matlab South Upazila, Martyr Md. Mizanur Rahman was born on May 5, 1976. Lajjati Begum is his mother's name, while Md. Khalil Rahman is his father. A number of years ago, both parents died. Shaheed Mizanur Rahman graduated from high school with his SSC after finishing his elementary education at the rural primary school. In order to provide for his family, he then moved to Dhaka.
Until the time of his martyrdom, he worked in a company called Women's World in Gulshan, Dhaka. He was married to Jharna Begum twenty years ago. They have a son and a daughter. They are both studying now.
The incident of martyrdom
Until August 5, 2024, it appeared impossible that Sheikh Hasina's dictatorial government of the Awami League would crumble so quickly. The Arab Spring in the Middle East, which started in 2010 when anti-authoritarian uprisings toppled one infamous tyrant after another in the area, is reflected in the historic downfall of the longest-serving female head of state in history. Prior to her resignation, the former prime minister of Bangladesh's response to the student quota reform movement—which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people—was comparable to the violent tactics and aggressive autocratic tendencies of the overthrown Arab leaders, such as Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Ben Ali of Tunisia.
The "one point" step-down slogan - one point, one demand - resonated in nationwide protests on Saturday, August 3, reminiscent of the Arab Spring slogan, "The people want to bring down the regime," as it was. A picture of hope and enthusiasm of mass gatherings of people from all walks of life struggling for democratic change. But beyond the optics, the most notable parallel between Bangladesh's historic movement and the Arab Spring is their driving force; widespread socio-economic grievances of the masses, youth, middle and lower classes towards widespread inequality and injustice, nurtured by a corrupt, fear-mongering autocracy. The fall of the genocidal autocrat Sheikh Hasina was indeed a success, but it shattered thousands of families.
How he was martyred
Saturday, July 21, 2024. The 'Complete Shut Down' program called by the anti-discrimination student movement was going on for the third day. The government, in addition to blacking out the internet to suppress the movement, also increased the curfew and declared a general holiday for all offices and courts. Shaheed Mizanur Rahman, an employee of a company named Gulshan Women's Ward, was staying at his river area residence as the office was closed. He went out to offer Asr prayers and on his way back home after praying, he fell in the middle of a clash between the police and the protesters. The police then started firing indiscriminately at the protesters. At one point, a bullet hit Shaheed Mizanur Rahman. Passers-by took him to the hospital where the authorities declared him dead. In this way, Shaheed Mizanur Rahman, who had just finished his Asr prayers, stepped on the path to Paradise.
Mourning in the family
Mourning is going on in the family due to the death of the only guardian of the family. The only son and the only daughter are saddened by the death of their father. They are still unable to forget the blood-stained martyr's coffin of their father. Meanwhile, the economic condition of the family is very dire. The whole family is now seeing darkness in their eyes after losing the only earning member of the family. There is constant scarcity going on. The two children of the family are still students. Their future is now uncertain. The martyr's wife is worried about their education. She says, "My children's future has become dark, what will I do now? There is no one in my family to earn a single taka."
Near relatives' feelings about the martyr
Daughter Farzana Akhtar Mahi: My father was our only guardian. We have lost the whole world after losing our father. We miss him so much. My father was not at fault. Why was he killed? We want an answer. We want the killers to be hanged.
