Incident Details & Martyrdom Narrative

Not everyone is born into the same circumstances. Some are born into comfort, while others are born into hardship. Many grow up receiving the love and care of their parents, while some are raised in struggles, deprived of parental affection. Shaheed Sahadat was one such boy who grew up facing immense hardship from a young age. On February 25, 2008, he was born to his parents, Khalilur Rahman and Shirtaj, bringing light into their lives. He was the eldest of two brothers. Born and raised in Balithuba village, Faridganj Upazila, Chandpur, his childhood was marked by struggles. Due to his parents' separation, he was raised by his grandparents. In a life filled with poverty, he worked at a restaurant to earn a livelihood, while his grandfather worked in agriculture.
Family Was Everything for Him
For Sahadat, his grandparents were his only family. Due to financial hardship, his grandmother had to give his younger brother up for adoption. Though everyone remained in this world, Sahadat had to leave forever, struck down by a bullet from the terrorist police. Many might think that he lived a life of suffering only to die in misery, but no—his death was not one of sorrow; it was one of honor. He attained the death of a martyr.
How He Became a Martyr
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh, stated, "Over the past 15 years, the ruling Awami League has destroyed most constitutional institutions. Although these institutions were under government control, they had become completely disconnected from the people. The foundation of Awami League's power was never sustainable because they had alienated themselves from the public." He further explained that people needed a catalyst, a spark—and that spark ignited through the student movement.
Political analyst Mohiuddin Ahmed remarked, "Fifteen years of accumulated frustration, soaring prices, mismanagement in public transport, corruption, and banking irregularities—all of this fueled public outrage. The quota reform movement became a trigger for people hoping for change."
One of the protesters, Tahmina Akter, told the BBC, "I don't need a government job, and I'm not even of the age to apply for one. But we are being deceived, repressed, and kept in fear. I want an end to this oppression. That’s why I took to the streets."
The movement eventually succeeded, but at the cost of innocent lives, taken by the terrorist organization Awami League and its accomplices.
On August 5, when the killer Hasina fled the country and the nation erupted in celebration, Sahadat was standing in front of a restaurant near Faridganj police station in Chandpur. Like every other day, he was at work. He watched in astonishment as the Awami League government, which had clung to power for 15 years, desperately tried to escape. Even with helicopter gunfire and hired mercenaries from India committing massacres, they could not suppress the people's movement.
Sahadat reflected on how Allah can turn a king into a beggar in an instant and raise a beggar to royalty—Sheikh Hasina’s downfall was proof of that. When enraged citizens gathered in front of the police station, the murderous police force opened fire indiscriminately. No one had imagined that even after victory, the terrorist police would continue shooting innocent people.
Amidst the chaos, a bullet struck Sahadat in the forehead. Right there, he embraced martyrdom. The killer police bullet pierced his forehead and exited through the back of his head. Defeated by death, Sahadat’s young life was cut short far too soon.
How His Family Is Coping After His Loss
Sahadat’s family was essentially his grandmother’s family. His grandfather was a farmer, and Sahadat worked in a restaurant. After his parents separated during his childhood, he was raised by his grandmother. With his martyrdom, their only source of income was lost. His elderly grandparents now struggle in extreme poverty, grieving the loss of their only grandson.
Relatives’ Thoughts on the Martyr
Uncle’s Statement: "There are very few like Sahadat. He was a devoted young man who prayed regularly, treated people kindly, and always stood against injustice. He tried to stay on the path of truth. His parents divorced when he was a child. He and his younger brother were separated—his grandmother gave the younger one up for adoption due to financial difficulties. Sahadat grew up with his grandmother. I work at a garage. His father remarried in Barishal and has no contact with his sons. He doesn’t even know that his child has been martyred."
Grandmother’s Words: "My grandson was raised by me since childhood. He never received his parents' love. I raised him with great hardship. He was very calm and always prayed. Now, in my grief-stricken heart, I cry and say, ‘Everyone comes home, but my dear grandson does not.’"
